  • Prestige Deco Kettle - Retro Glamour

    prestige-50s-kettle.jpg

The centre of every British home is its electric kettle. In our house we don’t even drink tea, but there it still stands a symbol of the British institution. I’ve always been mystified by its lack of status in the American home. Generally quicker than a stove top pan, the kettle is perfect for hot water on demand. We use ours for topping up pans that are in danger of boiling dry, mixing up stock cubes, even topping up the bath when the hot water has run out, as well as the ever popular tea our guests crave. Prestige have recently released a new electric kettle that brings a wonderful retro style to Britain’s favourite appliance. A simple domed form sings out with fabulous colour. The handle is a wonderful flattened tube that is easy to grip and hold. Bringing the vintage style into the modern age, Prestige have incorporated a subtle base which uses the modern central docking pin design. Amazingly simple, the pin design allows the kettle to be easy replaced from any angle, removing the old hassle of aligning the kettle on its base exactly. Prestige have also added a subtle water level indicator, which is extremely useful but doesn’t intrude on the sleek vintage style. Available in black, silver, almond, red, and the trendy duck egg blue, there is a colour for every kitchen. Perfect for bringing a sense of familiarity and friendly warmth to your kitchen the Prestige Deco kettle is just £52

July 2008 EDIT: A bit hard to find now, you can still get the Almond Prestige Deco Kettle for £45 from Heal's.

  • Typhoon Vintage Bread Bin

A part of the Typhoon Vintage Kitchen Range the bread bin features a strong metal form and a lovely enamel finish in cream, green, blue, pink and red. Once the lid is removed, a complementing enamel finish is revealed inside; soft blue is matched with cream, washed green with pink, and blush pink with cream. • The Garlic Twist

    garlic-twist.jpg

Everyday my garlic press get closer to breaking, so I'm always on the look out for a good replacement. However it seems the one thing they can't solve is how to puree or mince garlic. I've seen stacks and stacks of different products all claiming to be easy to use and clean, but so far none have been ideal. The new Garlic Twist seems to be the most recent attempt at this difficult problem. Made of an extremely durable polycarbonate, the Garlic Twist separates into two pieces, each with a line of plastic teeth inside. You place the garlic inside, and then press the lid till the teeth just reach the garlic. Then you TWIST. The rotating teeth shred through the garlic layer by layer, resulting in evenly minced garlic. When finished you turn it all the way to the right until it will go no further, and then the same to the left. With a final small twist you open it to find two tidy triangles of pureed garlic. Simple and easy, the Garlic Twist just needs a rinse of water after use. Apparently gentle enough for even those with week wrists, the Garlic Twist can also mince ginger, peppers and onions. Available in red, blue and clear you can find the Garlic Twist for £12.99 from an Amazon.co.uk retailer or $14.95 from an Amazon.com retailer.

  • Gary Rhodes Egg Separator by Typhoon

    typhoon-egg-seperator2.jpg

Rather than the tacky plastic things we are familiar with, the Gary Rhodes Egg Separator is an elegant piece of glazed porcelain. A vaguely bird like form, the small back slit allows you to easily pour off the white. The yoke can then be gently tipped out the front . Detailed with reminders in a simple font the egg separator becomes an intuitive tool. Though traditionalists will claim only egg shells are needed, current wisdom suggests that there is a risk of bacterial contamination by contacting the outside of the shells. Certainly a concern for those at risk of salmonella, an egg separator is merely a common sense precaution when cooking. A graceful sculptural form, the Gary Rhodes Egg Separator by Typhoon will be a piece you are proud to own and display. Available in the UK for £6 from Typhoon and $13.50 from Amazon.com in the US, it’s a fabulous addition to any kitchen

  • TeaStick

    teastick.jpeg

Tea is not only an institution, but an art form. Though tea is sold in easy to use teabags, this convenience sacrifices the flavour of the drink. For optimal infusion loose leaves of tea need room to mix freely with the water. The Teastick conveniently combines tradition tea infusers with a spoon, to mix the leaves and water effectively. To use the Teastick you simply scoop up your loose-leaf in the spoon and then slide the perforated cover down. Pop it in your cup, and pour in the hot water. Swirling the Teastick mixes the leaves and water for a wonderful flavourful beverage. The hook is easy to hold, and keeps the Teastick from sliding into your cup. Elegant, tidy and simple the Teastick offer the convenience of teabags but the full flavour of proper tea. Available from wishingfish.com for $18, Amazon for $15.95 and Another Coffee for £11.95.
