  • Presso Eco-Coffee Maker

    presso-coffee-maker.jpg

Hot drinks have had a cultural significance in countries across the world. From Japanese tea ceremonies to British High Tea, the ritual takes on a great importance. The Presso Coffee Maker aims to bring that sense of ritual to coffee in an environmentally friendly form. Made from eco-friendly and recyclable materials, the Presso uses your own strength rather than electric power. Just fill with espresso grounds and use your kettle to fill the top chamber. By lifting the arms the water filters though, and by pressing the arms down you create the pressure to brew delicious espressos, lattes and cappuccinos. A fairly small gadget that’s easy to move around the kitchen, the Presso Coffee Maker has an industrial glamour and eco-responsibility all for £59.95 from Ethical Superstore.

  • Morphy Richards Intellisteam

    morphy-richards-intellisteam.jpg

If you’re a fan step-up-and-go cookers, I bet this Morphy Richards Intellisteam will open up a world of new possibilities. Despite its complex appearance, the Intellisteam allows you to easily cook three separate dishes simultaneously. Just load your ingredients, set the timers and the Intellisteam will make sure everything is ready to serve at the same time. The Intellisteam features three separate compartments which are controlled independently, so you can steam vegetables, fish & rice in the same machine even if some require longer to cook. It does take up a fair chunk of your work space, but if you can cook a whole meal in it you may not need as many other pans or gadgets. I’m not totally convinced I can create enough completely steamed meals, but if you can it’s a fantastic way to eat more healthy as steaming preserves more nutrients than boiling and has less fat than methods that use oil. Bound to be popular with gadget lovers, the Intellisteam is £97.86 from Lakeland.

  • Le Creuset Stainless Steel Knob

    le-creuset-steel-knob1.jpg

This is our most recent acquisition. We love our Cast Iron Le Creuset, but found it frustrating that the handles weren’t safe at high temperatures. We’d seen the steel knobs on the plain white or black pieces, but I didn’t want to sacrifice those gorgeous colours! While clicking my way through the Le Creuset website I came upon a genius idea, Le Creuset sell replacement handles. Simply by replacing the phenolic handle which is only safe up to 190°C with a pretty new steel one, I could make my dish safe to use at any temperature! A quick and simple change that lets you get the most out of your cookware, the Le Creuset Stainless Steel Knob is just £7 from Amazon.

  • Typhoon Vintage Collection - Now in White!

    typhoon-white.jpg

It looks like this season sees a return to the timeless classics. Monochromatic colour schemes of pure white and deep black offer a sophistication that compliments your kitchen even if the season’s trendy colours have changed. Now Typhoon have brought this classic colour to their popular Vintage Collection. Taking inspiration from the 1950s, these retro storage containers bring a nostalgic warmth and comfort to today’s hectic life. I own both the Bread Bin and the Cake tin (in the old green colour), and I love them. There is a danger of the enamel chipping, but the sturdy and strong containers are a pleasure to use. Available from John Lewis, the Vintage Collection includes:

If you listen to the news these days, there doesn’t seem to be much to celebrate. But Finn Stone disagrees, instead he’s created an ironic aluminium Bowler Hat that seems to mock our current situation. Once the daily attire for businessmen and bankers, the bowler hat now symbolises historic British reserve. Certainly not a cheap investment, the Bowler Hat Ice Bucket has a solid construction and features the Finn Stone Hallmark along the rim. Use as an eccentric fruit bowl or to serve up that special bubbly and shrug of the worries of the world. A fabulous modern and unique design that will be fashionable for years the Finn Stone Bowler Hat is £129 from Rockett St George.

  • Spring into Inspiration with Charming Cherry Blossoms!

In Japan, the spring ritual of hanami cherry-blossom viewing under a clear blue sky is an absolute must. People eager to shake off the winter blues cram the parks, sitting on blankets under the trees, drinking cold beer and eating picnic delights from bento boxes.

Here in England, my garden is liberally sprinkled with confetti-like petals of white blossom that drift languidly down from the big Damson plum tree. Blossom brings with it the warmer spring weather that we've all been longing for. However, the weather in the UK is rather less predictable (it torrentially poured in London at last year's Japan Society Hanami party!).

So, Kitchen Critic's Kate and Isshoni London's Vanessa have teamed up to bring you the best of this season's cheerful, pretty home essentials to ensure we can all take pleasure in springtime sakura blooms, whatever the weather!

    sakura-bento.jpg

Sakura Jubako Bento Box & Sakura Water Bottle

To take along your picnic to the park and get into a cheery cherry-blossom viewing mood, you'll certainly need a bento box and flask. The Sakura Jubako bento box is a delightful, flower shaped bento box available from Japan specialists J-Box. This convenient 'jubako' style means that you can stack the layers - there are two large compartments for keeping your rice and other accompaniments separate. The Sakura Jubako bento boxes close securely with sealing Tupperware-style plastic lids. To complement the bento box is the smart 250 ml Sakura water bottle in striking black with a pink cherry blossom flowers motif. This flask has a neat push button operation to dispense water into the stainless steel cap/cup.

Available from J-Box (shipping should be between £3 to £5)
DX SAKURA JUBAKO Bento Box - USD $24.00 (Abt. £18.00)
SAKURA Mini Handy Water Bottle - USD $27.50 (Abt. £20.00)

    Cherry Blossom Glasses

These gorgeous party tumblers from Graham and Green will look stylish rain or shine. Use them to serve chilled saké, wine or beer - these versatile glasses with their sturdy base and compact size are so much less likely to be knocked over than stemmed wine glasses. There are six different colours of glasses in a set, each with a lovely frosted cherry blossom pattern rendered in white. The pattern is so subtle and festive you'll want to use the tumblers all year round - they'll look just at as home for a summer BBQ as they will at a blossom viewing party. Available from Graham and Green, the pretty, practical glasses are dishwasher friendly.

    Cherry Blossom Branch Lights

In Japan, people often enjoy the hanami party so much that they don't want to go home! With that in mind, the parks often string up paper lanterns that picturesquely illuminate the cherry blossoms even in the dark. Evenings are still dark early in the UK cherry blossom season... so why not light up your home or garden with Graham and Green's elegant Cherry Blossom Branch Lights? Standing the lights up in vases around your home is an attractive decorative accent... or why not try using the branches as unusual table centrepieces? You can choose from light pink, chocolate, pink and white lights, or combine them (they're surprisingly affordable!).

    Cherry Blossom Trivet

Besides its natural beauty, the cherry blossom has an almost iconic form. Long spindly branches that end in a burst of petals have an elegance often seen in contemporary designs. The Cherry Blossom Trivet creates a dramatic silhouette that drapes across your table. Arrange a few down the centre of your table, and you'll create a distinctive graphic display that's functional as well! Made from a durable cast iron, these stylish Cherry Blossom Trivets offer both protection and a simplified modern style. While we’d all love a perfectly designed recycling bin with specially designed containers for each type, but until there is a unified system across the UK it’s unlikely to happen. In some areas you can throw all your recycling together in a single bin, others have you separate materials into special groups, some even dictate the shape of what you can recycle! With such a variety of programs across the country, the best solution may be the generic one like the Dyna Recycling Pedal Bin from John Lewis. These 12L bins are small enough that you can stand a few together or tuck them in empty corners. Whether you need to sort your rubbish into two, three or even four bins, you can buy exactly what you need. When you step on the pedal, the clever design rocks the container forward which then forces the lid to pop open.
