Glamorous and practical, the Joseph Joseph Orb brings a futuristic style to the ancient pestle and mortar. The sleek porcelain globe is formed by two separate bowls that allow the lime green pestle to peek out. The large spherical bowl is ideal for the heavy duty grinding of many spices, while the smaller lid is perfect for hand-held crushing. Made from a vitrified porcelain, the Orb is durable and impervious to stains and odour. The pestle is also carefully weighted and features a soft-grip handle, to make grinding comfortable. I have no idea what your cupboards look like, but ours are packed full of large useful bowls nested within each other. While an efficient use of space, it's often tricky to remove the item you want. Our Salad Spinner is a perfect example; we bought a small one that fits in our mixing bowls, but I still need to pull several items out of the cupboard before I can free it. Lakeland have found a creative solution in their Collapsible Salad Spinner. Featuring a silicone 'gusset' the large bowl collapses down to just 7cm tall; the flat design is then easier to stack and store. Besides practical storage, the Collapsible Spinner also separates into to two, doubling as a colander and a serving bowl, making it even more useful. Using a drawstring-action to dry those bright leafy greens, the Collapsible Salad Spinner offers compact convenience and versatility for £34.99 from Lakeland.

While on the subject of cluttered cupboards, the Stellar Eai Store Pan Set is a genius idea for small kitchens. The set of three pans fit together so precisely, they have a puzzle-like quality. Like Russian dolls, each pan fits completely inside the other leaving no precarious piles in your cupboard. You can even see the lids handles growing in size from the smallest 16 cm pan up to the largest at 20cm. I'm most impressed with the pan handles though, which are carefully shaped to be comfortable while still fitting within each other. Oven-safe up to 180°C and suitable for all hob types including induction, the Stellar Eazi Store Pans are £89.99 from Lakeland.

It doesn't always cost a fortune to get your hands on fashionable designer products. Jan Kaplicky was born in Prague in 1937 and when designing a new set of airline cutlery he was inspired by the legendary Czechoslovakian fighter planes. The Zlin Cutlery is named after these famous planes and features the sweeping smooth lines that remind you of those exciting blue skies. Unfortunately Kaplicky passed away last year, but in tribute Alessi have commissioned these poetic utensils. Made from an affordable thermoplastic resin, the set includes a fork, knife, spoon and teaspoon. Available in blue, yellow or green, the Zlin Cutlery sets are £7.95 from the Design Museum's Online Shop.

I'm afraid the picture here really doesn't do the John Lewis Vintage Chick Bowl justice. I picked it up in store and it immediately reminded me of the bowl Dan's cousin brought us back from Portugal. Finished in a milky white distressed glaze, the outside of the bowl has a soft faceted texture that gives it a warm rustic style. Complementing this is a pattern of colourful birds, that add vibrant character to this earthenware bowl. Great for serving salad in, the Vintage Chick Mixing Bowl is just £12 from John Lewis.

Maybe I'm odd, but I really enjoy hulling big bowls of strawberries for summer parties. There's something rather relaxing about the repetitive work. But if you find it a tedious job, the Chef'n StemGem may add a bit of fun. The strawberry coloured tool has four stainless steel teeth that snatch out the stem, leaving the delicious flesh. Pressing the green button triggers the quick and easy claw mechanism which can also be used to hull tomatoes. A bright and cheerful kitchen gadget for the summer, the Chef'n StemGem is £5.99 from Lakeland.

Dan is quite fond of our garlic peeler, which quickly removes those papery garlic skins without damaging the cloves. You just need to pop the clove in soft silicone tube and give it a firm roll. The silicone tube offers just enough grip to easily pull the skin off. With the new Good Grips Garlic Peeler, the clever Oxo designers have added a few more features that improve on this ingenious product. Each end of the Good Grips Garlic Peeler tapers, so the gloves can't easily escape when you roll the tube on the counter. The clear silicone also lets you check your progress without removing the cloves. Finally the Good Grips Garlic Peeler has a vented storage box so it doesn't get squished in your drawers. A great way to keep the garlic smell off your hands, the OXO Good Grips Garlic Peeler is £5 from John Lewis.
