We like our GreenPans at Kitchen Critic. They're great to cook with, hard wearing and capable of withstanding greater temperatures than traditional non-stick pans and they're better for the environment to boot. For their latest pans GreenPan have teamed up with Michelin starred chef and Master Chef: The Professionals judge Michel Roux Jr. Designed with the professional cook in mind the Michel Roux Collection all feature the mineral based Thermolon coating and cast handles throughout the range. The lidded saucepans and the larger frying pan also have additional helper handles for that extra bit of control. Made from tri-ply stainless steel with a polished finish, the collection is accented by the chef's signature. Available from John Lewis the Michel Roux Jr Collection by GreenPan is priced between £50 & £95.

Exclusive to John Lewis the Provenance range of kitchenware are both beautiful to look at and kind to the environment. The 100% recycled glass gives a wonderful green tint to the storage jars, spice jars, tumblers and especially the elegantly curved decanter. Keeping the range sustainable, the finishing touches are provided by reclaimed Indian teak. Though nice enough on the lids the reclaimed teak really comes into it's own on the chopping boards and antipasti platter. Certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council the dark teak creates a beautiful and unique pattern of grains across the surface of each piece. Hardwaring and with a delightful rustic look the Provenance Kitchenware range is available from John Lewis priced from £10 to £90.

I really love our GreenPans. When we first got them we only considered the Thermolon coating to be a harder wearing and environmentally friendly alternative to regular non-stick surfaces. After using them for a few years I'd happily recommend them purely on the basis of the cooking surface. PTFE non-stick pans have a waxy finish that repels water and oils and doesn't brown as well as a traditional pan whereas the GreenPans provide both excellent browning and an easy to clean non-stick surface.
Lakeland are now stocking the "Rotterdam" GreenPan Professional range, designed with the catering industry in mind. As well as the Thermolon coating the "Rotterdam" GreenPans feature an extra long handle with a removable silicon sleeve so you can finish dishes under the grill or in the oven. The handles are secured with three rivets to provide extra strength for heavy use and the pans come with wide pouring rims to aid in serving up. With prices starting form £29.99 Lakeland stock the 20cm frying pan, the 26cm frying pan and a 20cm chef's pan.

A fruit bowl for the Ikea generation, the Normann Copenhagen Fruity Fruit Basket offers eco-friendly with designer style. Reminiscent of a maths calculation I'd have tackled in high school, this geometric web of wood veneer sweeps up off the table. Designed by Charlotte Arvidsson, the Fruity Bowl comes flat-packed, which reduces packaging and transportation costs. Add to this the minimal materials used, and this product shows yet another approach to eco-friendly design. A dramatic bowl that doesn't cost the earth, the Normann Copenhagen Fruity Fruit Basket is £16 from Royal Design.

We all know the mantra Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, but some items just don't match our modern aesthetics. For example coloured vintage glassware has an amazing intensity, but can feel a bit tacky and out dated. So I love how these vibrant glasses have been reclaimed by RE. By adding traditional tattoo patterns to these half-pint & brandy glasses, RE creates a sense of vintage subversive. The juxtaposition of two familiar images from the same time period, it creates something fresh and contemporary. A must have for any retro diva, the Reclaimed Vintage Tattoo Glasses are available online from RE-Found Objects.

When I was in school I was a member of the science club. Though I was really more interested in the cute lad I had a crush on, I was also responsible for learning all the different leaves for the nature event. My favourite was the Gingko which was unmistakeable. The pretty fan shaped leaves always hinted at the exotic and unique. These Gingko Placemats are made from 100% recycled Pevetex, a plastic textile used in cars. They are light, flexible & durable making them suitable for use indoors & out. A distinctive & environmentally-friendly addition to your table, a set of 2 Gingko placemats is £14.90 from Bouf. A set of 6 matching coasters is also available for £9.00.

Growing up in Canada in the early 80s, my mother always bought milk in bags. You'd drop the plastic bag in an open jug, snip the corner of the bag instantly creating a spout. For me bagged milk is firmly associated with Canada, as I've never encountered it anywhere else. So imagine my surprise when I spotted the Jugit Milk Jugs while shopping in Tesco, on Canada Day no less! The design has come on a long way in the last 30 years, the Jugit Milk Jugs features a clever lid that punctures the bag of milk and then keeps the spout covered with a flip top cap. Just drop the bag of milk into the Jugit, clip the corner of the bag to the front of the jug, and then pop on the lid. Quick & simple to use, bagged milk creates 75% less packaging! A classic eco-Friendly solution, you can get Country Life Bagged Milk and the Jugit Milk Bag Jugs from Tesco or Ocado.

We all know that we need to keep hydrated in warmer weather, but take a bottle of water with you and you'll be lugging it around all day long (even if it's empty!) Vapur have tackled this problem with their new Anti-Bottle. More like a collapsible pouch, the Anti-Bottle is only as big as the water inside. Fold it, roll it, crumple it up, the Vapur water bottle is flexable and adaptable. With a triple-wall design there's no risk of punctures and there's a handy carabiner that keeps your hands free. It's made from BPA free plastic, offers an inner layer odour, taste and stain resistant and is even dishwasher-safe. Great for a range of beverages, the clever base even lets it stand up on a table. Don't forget drinking tap water instead of bottled water is also good for the enviorment! A brilliant choice for the summer holidays, the Vapur Anti-Bottle is £9.99 from Firebox.

The best eco-friendly developments are really going to be those that are desirable rather than a gimmicky. It's great to say 'Look you can make glasses out of old beer bottles!', but very few people will use those at their next dinner party. It's for this reason that I find products like Eddingtons new Mini Bamboo Colanders so exciting. Granted they are only 15cm wide, but they hold so much promise for the future. The Mini Colanders are made with bamboo fibre, which grows quickly without the need for pesticides or fertilisers. The bright colours are created with 100% natural dyes and the Colander is completely biodegradable, yet it can be popped in the dishwasher (top shelf recommended). Hopefully the first of many cool eco-friendly products, the Mini Bamboo Colander is £5.00 from the Design Museum Shop.

Nothing brings you down faster after a party than realising you need to clean up. These new Ecoplate from EcoZone at least offer something to look forward too. Perfect for parties, these biodegradable plates have easy to grip edges and wine glass holder. But what makes them special is the sunflower seed hidden inside each one. Once used just dig a hole in your garden, bury the plate and water it. Made from Sugar Cane Bagasses, it takes just 3 months to degrade, releasing the germinated sunflower seed. While we’d all love a perfectly designed recycling bin with specially designed containers for each type, but until there is a unified system across the UK it’s unlikely to happen. In some areas you can throw all your recycling together in a single bin, others have you separate materials into special groups, some even dictate the shape of what you can recycle! With such a variety of programs across the country, the best solution may be the generic one like the Dyna Recycling Pedal Bin from John Lewis. These 12L bins are small enough that you can stand a few together or tuck them in empty corners. Whether you need to sort your rubbish into two, three or even four bins, you can buy exactly what you need. When you step on the pedal, the clever design rocks the container forward which then forces the lid to pop open. A modern understated solution for recycling, the Dyna Recycling Pedal Bins are available from John Lewis.

Hot drinks have had a cultural significance in countries across the world. From Japanese tea ceremonies to British High Tea, the ritual takes on a great importance. The Presso Coffee Maker aims to bring that sense of ritual to coffee in an environmentally friendly form. Made from eco-friendly and recyclable materials, the Presso uses your own strength rather than electric power. Just fill with espresso grounds and use your kettle to fill the top chamber. By lifting the arms the water filters though, and by pressing the arms down you create the pressure to brew delicious espressos, lattes and cappuccinos. A fairly small gadget that’s easy to move around the kitchen, the Presso Coffee Maker has an industrial glamour and eco-responsibility all for £59.95 from Ethical Superstore.

I'll admit that I've been waffling on this one for a few weeks; I can't decide if the idea is brilliant or pointless. The most common complaint with other eco-kettles is that they simply don't get hot enough to make tea. Rather than actually boil the water they just make it very hot, which is fine for coffee but spoils the taste of tea. Morphy Richards has solved this problem with an eco switch. This allows you to turn the eco function on and off. When turned on you use 24% less energy because the water is heated to just below boiling, and when you want a cup of tea you flip the switch for a full powered kettle. At least this does seem to bridge the problem. It lets you save energy when making coffee, hot chocolate and herbal teas, without making the kettle useless for tea. My question is in a nation of tea lovers how often will that eco switch be turned on? Certainly a well thought out product for modern living, the Morphy Richards Ecolectric Jug Kettle is definitely worth a gander! Available from Amazon UK, the Ecolectric Kettle is £36.89.

Christmas is a time of festive decorations, and there is no reason why you can't bring festive spirit into your kitchen. This year I've found two wreaths that celebrate Christmas with foodie style! The first is Lakeland's Star Anise Wreath, the star-shaped spice is the perfect choice for Christmas. Both sophisticated and rustic, this wreath has a lovely liquorice-like aroma. Hang it with a gorgeous wide ribbon ('Continue Reading' to see photo) and you've a glamorous decoration for both modern and traditional homes. Or if you're looking for something a bit spicier this Christmas you might find a traditional Chilli Wreath from Papilio more appealing. Popular in South America, the preserved red chillies are bound to a coco-hair wreath making it an eco-friendly choice. Both wreaths bring a unique kitchen theme to the Christmas holidays, and offer a charming change to the normal mass-produced wreaths.

Cleaning is never fun, but you can now scrub your kitchen in fashion with the new Sarah Smith Cleaning Cloths! Last week Severn Delta sent us several of the brightly coloured dusters and cleaning cloths to try-out, so we got out our camera and started cleaning. The Sarah Smith Cloths offer a fine balance between disposable and re-useable. The light-weight but durable cloths can be thrown through the washer about ten times, after which you can replace grubby cloths with pretty new ones. I was impressed by how soft the Ultra Absorbent Cleaning Cloths are once wet, they lose the stiff paper feel you expect from disposable cloths and become lovely comfortable cloths that are easy to use. In contrast the Sarah Smith Dusters aren’t as soft straight out of the packet, but they are quite large so you can do a fair bit of dusting before you need to clean it off.

Available in a wide range of patterns, the Sarah Smith Collections include modern florals, graphic prints and pastel classics; so you’re sure to find something to match your own individual style. Practical cloths in bright cheerful colours, you won’t need to hide these cloths when company comes around to visit. Finally, the Sarah Smith Collections are even made in Bridgewater, Somerset! British made, highly fashionable and effective the full range of Sarah Smith Cloths are available online at www.sarah-smith.co.uk.
Pack of 3 - Sarah Smith Ultra Absorbent Cleaning Cloths - £1.50
Pack of 2 - Sarah Smith Dusting Cloths - £1.00
You should also be able to find them in your local Tesco, Sainsbury's, ASDA or Waitrose. Ocado has them listed here:
Pack of 3 - Sarah Smith Ultra Absorbent Cleaning Cloths - £1.50
Pack of 2 - Sarah Smith Dusting Cloths - £0.99

Maybe we don't know how to manage modern life while preserving our planet, but that doesn't mean we can't try to bridge the gap. Just because they are environmentally responsible, doesn't mean they can't be products you'll love. Take the Green Planet Frypans for example. Made from 50% recycled aluminium and with lovely bamboo handles the Green Planet Pans have less impact on the environment, but their elegant design is still stunning in the kitchen. The layered bamboo handles have a warm natural beauty that complements the clean modern design of the pan. Featuring the Classic Teflon non-stick coating, the Green Planet Frypans are currently on sale at Lakeland.
24cm Green Planet Frypan – £10.99 (RRP £17.99)
28cm Green Planet Frypan – £11.99 (RRP £19.99)
Green Planet Stir-Fry Pan – £12.99 (RRP £21.99)

With so many stores now charging for carrier bags, it's tempting to look for a stylish alternative. These bright bags from Reisenthel offer a modern interpretation of traditional baskets. Designed by Katja Horst, the Carrybag features a light aluminium frame and a fabric basket made of a tear-proof polyester fabric that is even washable. However unlike it's wicker cousins, the Reisenthel Carrybag can fold flat for convenient storage. Simply remove the plastic side supports and the bag collapses neatly away. Perfect for groceries or merely carrying around bits and bobs, the Reisenthel Carrybag is available in kiwi green and red for £28 from FunktionAlley.

I love getting together with family and friends for parties and celebrations, but it isn't always easy to serve a large group of people. Traditionally people would turn to paper plates, but modern designers have created some clever solutions that are kinder for the environment. The new CaterPlate provides a light weight solution to all your party problems. No more juggling or dropping knives, each CaterPlate provides your guests with cutlery, a plate, two sauce trays and a safe place to hold your wine glass. While at first glance they look like one use items, each of the utensils can be reattached after use. A brilliant balance between disposable and reusable, you can wash the CaterPlate but you also don't need to worry if they get broken. A great addition to your summer barbeques, parties and picnics, the CaterPlate is available in black, clear or orange from Smarter Products.
Pack of 6 CaterPlates - £4.99
Pack of 10 CaterPlates - £7.59
Pack of 48 CaterPlates - £32.99

Lighting can dramatically change the mood and ambiance of your kitchen, and with a few of these Pendant Jelly Lights you can add character and charm at the same time. Vintage jelly moulds are reclaimed and transformed into these brilliant light shades. Each shade is made from a large metal mould and then paired with a small jelly mould as the pendant's rose for a clever lighting solution. By reusing the traditional shaped moulds, they blend classic kitchen icons with modern lighting design. A brilliant addition over kitchen bars, the Pendant Jelly Lights are £45 from RE.

While everyone has at least heard of organic vegetables and the benefits they offer, it's surprising that other plant derivatives are often ignored. Cotton production for example accounts for about 16% pesticides used worldwide. While you aren't in danger of ingesting these chemicals, they still make their way into water supplies and eco-systems. Lately there has been a growing trend for organic cotton products; small collections of clothes and towels have been released, but often they are only available in natural creams and beige. So in contrast, the new organic kitchen collection by C'est Ca is quite exciting. Featuring a modern vegetable print with trendy greens and deep purples, these fashionable kitchen gloves offer eco-friendly style. Made from non-GM plants and grown without pesticides, the pretty Turnip Apron and Oven Gloves are ideal for modern ethical kitchens. A brilliant new collection that allows you both style and ethical options, the Organic Turnip textiles by C'est Ca are available from John Lewis.

Practical and affordable, Tesco offers you new ways to recycle easily. These Stackable Recycling Crates feature a wide front opening that makes it easy to fill and empty. The set includes three green nesting crates with clear hinged lids. Made from recycled materials, these crates encourage the reuse of consumer waste. The plastic boxes do flex and distort a bit, but once the lids are attached the crates begin to square up. A simple but practical design that provides an economical kitchen solution, the Tesco Stackable Recycling Crates are £25.00 online, though when we picked them up in store they were on special offer for £15.
