When it comes to cooking there are two basic approaches, there are those that treat it like an art and those that approach it as a science. The artist love throwing ingredients together and consider recipes a loose guide, while the science types prefer exact measuring and clear instructions. The designers at Mode have taken this idea rather literally with their Earl Lab Flask Sets. Inspired by the iconic Erlenmeyer chemistry flask, the Earl sets bring a functional minimalism to contemporary tables.

The Earl Salt and Pepper set features a single hole through the corks, while the bigger Earl Oil & Vinegar set has stainless steel pourers running through the corks. The oil drizzler also has a breathing tube, so you'll always get a smooth flow whether you're shaking it over salad or cooking. Simple and quirky, the Earl Oil & Vinegar Set is £19.99 while the Earl Salt & Pepper Set is £9.99 both from Totally Funky.

An internal sensor notes its angle, and activates the powerful ceramic grater automatically when it's held over your plate. I'm not usually fond of cutsie Salt and Pepper Shakers, but the new Squirrel Shakers from Cath Kidston are quite endearing. They remind me of the little figures you used to collect in boxes of tea; the way the rich fur texture is created through the glaze. Each Squirrel is munching on its own tasty nut, so they won't be squabbling on the table. Adorable critters that will charm both family and friends, the Squirrel Salt & Pepper Set is £15 from Cath Kidston.

If you love strong spicy flavours, you've probably experienced the painful misfortune of getting chilli in your eyes. Jim Hannon-Tan at Alessi has devised a simple solution in the Piccantino. The soft rubber body allows you to crush and crumble your chillies, releasing their fresh flavour, while protecting your fingers. If there's any chilli leftover, the polished steel cap will let you save it for later. Small enough to fit in your pocket, it's a perfect gift for connoisseurs who always want to top up their meals. The famous red chilli is a good luck charm in Naples, so hopefully the Alessi Piccantino is just a sign of good things to come. Available from Made In Design, the Alessi Piccantino Chilli Scruncher is £13.

I often feel bad for blokes that like to cook. There seems to be an assumption that only women buy things for the kitchen, so there is a lot of pastels and cupcakes splashed across everything. The Hairy Bikers are now working to even up the balance with their new collection of cookware. The Hairy Biker Pestle and Mortar for example is finished in cobalt blue glaze that offers a masculine style. The inside of the Mortar is unglazed, revealing the cream stoneware. The unusual mortar shape allows the matching pestle to rest on either side and gives it a distinctive profile. Available from John Lewis, the Hairy Biker Pestle and Mortar is £25.

I've managed to escape for a pre-Christmas holiday visit with a friend in Tunbridge Wells. It's a fabulous town for shopping. Yesterday I wandered into the Aga Store and managed to bag myself a brilliant bargain on a pair of Microplane Graters. They've been on my wish list for years! Designed for professional chefs, Microplane blades use chemicals to create extremely sharp teeth unlike traditionally stamped graters. The Professional series features an ergonomic curved steel handle and rubber foot that keeps it from sliding away. If you want some yourself, you can get them from Cooking Marvellous for £17.99 each.

It's been a while since we featured a garlic gadget, as we've been very happy with the Anolon Garlic Press. But Lakeland claims the new Garlic Chop is one of the best they've seen! Just pop your peeled cloves into the Chopper and give it a good twist. The ridges on the garlic-shaped chopper offer a firm grip as you twist it back and forth. After the strong teeth have shredded your garlic to a fine pulp, there is no awkward fishing to get it out! By pushing up the base, the Garlic Chop gathers the pureed garlic so you can easily sweep it off. A clever solution to a fiddly problem, the Garlic Chop can even go in the dishwasher. Simple to use and quick to clean, the Garlic Chop is £9.99 from Lakeland.

I know the housewives’ trick for removing garlic odours from your hands. Rubbing your hands on a steel spoon under cold running water removes the smell, but often you’re still left with an annoying hint of garlic. For those days when even a hint is just too much, Chef’n has made the Garlic Zoom. Simply pop the peeled cloves through the hole in the top, and then drive it around your kitchen counters. The spinning blades do all the work leaving you with finely chopped garlic, ready to add straight into the pan. Brilliant for those with sensitive noses or when you are playing hostess, the Garlic Zoom offers fresh flavour in seconds. Now available at Lakeland, the (top shelf) dishwasher-safe Chef’n Garlic Zoom is £7.99.

When I started my first design job I used to love flipping through the Pantone colour book. It held the promise of fabulous future designs in any colour you could imagine. Apparently I'm not the only one with this strange attraction to the Pantone colour system. Starting with a wide range of mugs, Pantone created the Pantone Universe which brings the colour charts to life through clever new products. I love the new Typhoon Pantone Crushgrind Mill which gives unique shape to the bold strong colours. The number on the colour label identifies exactly what shade each mill is, while creating an interesting band around the bottom. I've been searching for a good garlic press for ages, it seems they either never work properly in the first place or they soon break. We discovered the Anolon Stainless-Steel Garlic Press while visiting Dan's brother. We were hugely impressed with the solid construction and how well it crushed garlic in a single press. So a few weeks before the wedding when our can opener exploded, we decided to continue with the Anolon line. So far the Anolon Can Opener is living up to expectations, and we anticipate it's quality and durability will last. Each tool is made from strong solid steel and features an ergonomic SureGrip. The brightly polished stainless steel paired with the grey silicon rubber grips creates a clean modern look. That final sprinkle of nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger is often what transforms a basic dish into something extraordinary. Unfortunately getting out a large box grater or fiddly spice grater can put you off these small touches. The Microplane Grate-N-Shake solves this by creating a handy unit that keeps everything easily together. Simply grate the spice against the patented surgical grade steel blades and the ground spice collects in the clear compartment. When finished you just turn the container over and the blade acts as a grill that gently sprinkles flavour across you drinks and desserts. The second black compartment features a sliding lid, ideal for storing unground spices. A clever complete unit, the Microplane Grate-N-Shake ensures fresh grated flavour is always at your finger tips. A great addition to your home coffee bar, the Microplane Grate-N-Shake is available for £9.95 from both Kitchenaria and Amazon.co.uk

Made from 18/10 stainless steel and featuring SureGrip silicone grips, these strong and sturdy handles won't flex and bend over time. The large basket of the press can comfortably hold a few cloves of garlic, which is then easily crushed into a fine paste. Even more impressively, there is hardly any garlic left in the press! And finally with a quick flip, the self-cleaning spikes make quick work of any remains. An efficient press which is designed to last, the Anolon Garlic Press is £9.98 from Amazon.co.uk
or $17.99 from Amazon.com.

For ages I've been searching for the perfect way to store fresh cloves of garlic. It obviously needs to be kept dark, cool and well ventilated, but too often the jars were fussy or sculpted to look like garlic. While those all have their place I wanted a more classic style that would blend with my dream of a transitional-vintage kitchen. The Henry Watson Garlic Cellar does just that, made of terracotta it offers an earthy rustic feel while also absorbing excess moisture making your garlic last longer. The simple jar features six large holes for ventilation, but little else to distract from its practical elegance. The lid of the Garlic Cellar is stamped with the vintage inspired label that marks the Henry Watson brand. Henry Watson's potteries have been producing their classic English earthenware for nearly two centuries. It recalls an era when packaging was durable and hardy, often taking on a long second life. A fabulous new design in a wonderfully vintage style, Henry Watson brings you a Garlic Cellar that offers a practical elegance perfect for any kitchen. Part of the Henry Watson's Suffolk Collection, the Garlic Cellar is available for £11.95 on Amazon.co.uk

Everyday my garlic press get closer to breaking, so I'm always on the look out for a good replacement. However it seems the one thing they can't solve is how to puree or mince garlic. I've seen stacks and stacks of different products all claiming to be easy to use and clean, but so far none have been ideal. The new Garlic Twist seems to be the most recent attempt at this difficult problem. Made of an extremely durable polycarbonate, the Garlic Twist separates into two pieces, each with a line of plastic teeth inside. You place the garlic inside, and then press the lid till the teeth just reach the garlic. Then you TWIST. The rotating teeth shred through the garlic layer by layer, resulting in evenly minced garlic. When finished you turn it all the way to the right until it will go no further, and then the same to the left. With a final small twist you open it to find two tidy triangles of pureed garlic. Simple and easy, the Garlic Twist just needs a rinse of water after use. Apparently gentle enough for even those with week wrists, the Garlic Twist can also mince ginger, peppers and onions. Available in red, blue and clear you can find the Garlic Twist for £12.99 from an Amazon.co.uk retailer or $14.95 from an Amazon.com retailer.

Fantastically simple, the RoyalVKB garlic crusher eliminates fuss and bother. A solid steel bar with a central ridged ring, the Garlic crusher uses a simple rolling pin action to break garlic down to size. Without the small corners or tiny holes of a normal garlic press, the garlic crusher makes cleaning effortless. With a stroke of genius, designer Ineke Hans specifically chose steel for her garlic crusher. Thus while cleaning the garlic crusher it removes the adhesive garlic smell from your hands. Simple, elegant, and yet utterly fabulous RoyalVKB shows how design can make life’s irritations effortless. Available for £11.50 in the UK and $15 in the US

This wonderful stoneware pestle and mortar is not only simple domestic elegance, it’s practical and comfortable to use. The thick chunky wooden handle comfortably supports the large stoneware head of the pestle. The mortar has a light stoneware texture on the inside and a smooth creamy pastel glaze on the outside; creating a sensuous mix of subtle textures. The pestle’s broad head gives you a large surface area for grinding your spices, while the natural stoneware texture gives a slight grip that keeps those awkward seeds from running away. All this means less work is needed to add the full-flavour of freshly ground spices to your meals. With a convenient pouring spout that doubles as a pestle rest, the Debenhams’ pestle and mortar offers superior function behind effortless grace. A mere £12 from Debenhams.
