  • Earl Lab Flask Sets by Mode

    mode-earl-lab-flask-salt-pepper.jpg

When it comes to cooking there are two basic approaches, there are those that treat it like an art and those that approach it as a science. The artist love throwing ingredients together and consider recipes a loose guide, while the science types prefer exact measuring and clear instructions. The designers at Mode have taken this idea rather literally with their Earl Lab Flask Sets. Inspired by the iconic Erlenmeyer chemistry flask, the Earl sets bring a functional minimalism to contemporary tables.

    mode-earl-lab-flask-oil.jpg

The Earl Salt and Pepper set features a single hole through the corks, while the bigger Earl Oil & Vinegar set has stainless steel pourers running through the corks. The oil drizzler also has a breathing tube, so you'll always get a smooth flow whether you're shaking it over salad or cooking. Simple and quirky, the Earl Oil & Vinegar Set is £19.99 while the Earl Salt & Pepper Set is £9.99 both from Totally Funky.

  • OXO Good Grips Red Y-Peeler

    oxo-red-y-peeler-good-grips.jpg

For their 20th Birthday, OXO is returning to their roots. The Y-Peeler was the first tool developed for the Good Grips Range, and is still their most popular and best selling tool. To celebrate their anniversary OXO has created a festive red Y-Peeler that will be perfect for the Christmas holidays. OXO were kind enough to send us one in the post, and I have to admit I was impressed. The peeler cuts smoothly and more easily than you can imagine, removing only a wafer thin layer of skin. This ensures that you retain as many of the vitamins and nutrients just under the skin. You should soon see OXO Red Y-Peelers appearing in stores around the country, retailing for £5.50.

If you can't wait that long, you can get the Good Grips Y-Peeler in Black for £4.25 from Amazon UK.

  • Cuisipro Apple Corer

    cuisipro-apple-corer.jpg

When I was little, I was fascinated with my mother's apple corer. It had a bright orange handle you'd normally see on a screwdriver and a thick ring of blunt teeth. I probably remember it so clearly, as I could never get the blasted thing to work. I could never get enough pressure to cut through the apple, and once someone had helped me it was always a fight to get the core back out of the tool. It looks like Cuisipro have solved all my childhood frustrations with their new Apple Corer. The new ergonomic handle helps you put all your force behind the blade so it slices through the apple easier. Then when you've finally succeeded, a quick flick of the lever opens the blades and releases the core. A brilliant new design for this retro kitchen gadget, the Cuisipro Apple Corer is £7.99 from Lakeland.

  • OXO Good Grips Garlic Peeler

    oxo-garlic-peeler.jpg

Dan is quite fond of our garlic peeler, which quickly removes those papery garlic skins without damaging the cloves. You just need to pop the clove in soft silicone tube and give it a firm roll. The silicone tube offers just enough grip to easily pull the skin off. With the new Good Grips Garlic Peeler, the clever Oxo designers have added a few more features that improve on this ingenious product. Each end of the Good Grips Garlic Peeler tapers, so the gloves can't easily escape when you roll the tube on the counter. The clear silicone also lets you check your progress without removing the cloves. Finally the Good Grips Garlic Peeler has a vented storage box so it doesn't get squished in your drawers. A great way to keep the garlic smell off your hands, the OXO Good Grips Garlic Peeler is £5 from John Lewis.

  • Canning Set from Lakeland

    lakeland-canning-set2.jpg

I can’t believe I forgot to write about the Lakeland Canning Set! We bought a set last year when we decided to try our hand at jam making. They aren’t particularly flash or fancy, but they are very handy when handling hot jars and jam. The four piece set includes a jar lifter, a set of tongs, a magnetic lid lifter and a lid tightener. The plastic lifting wand has a magnet at the end to easily lift lids out of the water after you’ve sterilising them. Both the jar lifter and the lid tightener use plastic coated bars to add extra grip as you lift slippery wet jars out of the pan or to tightly seal your lids. Dan finds the tightener works better when he holds the jar (which is hot after being filled with jam) with the tool and then turn the lids by hand. Finally the tongs are handy for moving hot jars around on your counter. An affordable kit that makes jam making easier and safer, the Canning Set is just £6.84 from Lakeland.

Plus with our fabulous new green pans, I don’t want to use metal utensils if I can help it. I’ve been really pleased with the Good Grips Turner we bought. • Scrrub Brush

    scrrub.jpg

If you're a fan of home grown veg, you'll know that it doesn't look quite so pretty when pulled straight out of the ground, but it's only a few minutes to clean off that rich earth to reveal the tasty jewels of your garden. For quite sometime I've been looking for a really good brush that cleans well and can be cleaned easily itself. With the Scrrub Brush, I've finally found one I want to get my hands on. Featuring large silicone bristles, dirt and bits shouldn't get trapped between them, while their unique design offers you a unexpected level of control. You can scrub your robust veg like carrots and potatoes harder than you do delicate fruits simply by changing the direction you are scrubbing from clockwise to anti-clockwise. Recommended for removing pesticides, dirt, wax, and baked on foods the Scrrub Brush is £4.99 from Lakeland.

Every kitchen needs at least two pairs of scissors. One pair needs to be easy to clean, durable and sharp enough to tackle chicken pieces, herbs and bits of veg. The other pair is used to tackle the every day tasks, from opening packets to cutting construction paper. To be honest this second pair is mostly needed as an insurance that your cooking scissors don't go walking off when husbands and children go looking through your kitchen drawers. However, just because they aren't used for cooking doesn't mean they aren't important. Ten years ago Fiskars revolutionised Scissor design, and since then they've been they've been a practical choice for around the home. • Gary Rhodes Egg Separator by Typhoon

    typhoon-egg-seperator2.jpg

Rather than the tacky plastic things we are familiar with, the Gary Rhodes Egg Separator is an elegant piece of glazed porcelain. A vaguely bird like form, the small back slit allows you to easily pour off the white. The yoke can then be gently tipped out the front . Detailed with reminders in a simple font the egg separator becomes an intuitive tool. Though traditionalists will claim only egg shells are needed, current wisdom suggests that there is a risk of bacterial contamination by contacting the outside of the shells. Certainly a concern for those at risk of salmonella, an egg separator is merely a common sense precaution when cooking. A graceful sculptural form, the Gary Rhodes Egg Separator by Typhoon will be a piece you are proud to own and display. Available in the UK for £6 from Typhoon and $13.50 from Amazon.com in the US, it’s a fabulous addition to any kitchen

  • Typhoon Wooden Spoons – Stir It!

    typhoon-wooden-spoons-stir-it-1.JPG

Have you gone looking for wooden spoons lately? In recent years the selection has been abysmal. Typhoon have made the spoon we’ve all been dreaming of! Lovely rounded handles and properly carved heads make a spoon that’s a pleasure to use. Each one is made of a lovely light Beech wood. The handles are then hot stamped with the name and logo, but the typewriter font adds character and personality. The spoons add a bit of trendy fun with names like ‘lift it’, ‘stir it’ and ‘turn it’. With most spoons just a £1 the Typhoon range of utensils are the ideal stocking stuffer for cooks this Christmas. They are available at John Lewis and online at Bennetts.
