Serving a beautifully prepared meal is often a matter of timing. If you're making a complex meal, it can be tricky keeping track of several dishes at once. These brightly coloured timers offer a handy reminder whether you're cooking up a storm or simply playing with the kids. These large disc timers stick neatly to the fridge or other metal surfaces like steel splash-backs. Their flat design makes the timers easy to clean, while the vibrant colours are easy find at a quick glance. A modern design that doesn't get lost amongst kitchen clutter, these magnetic kitchen timers are available for £8 from Emma Bridgewater in Red – Blue – Green – Pink.

One of the hottest kitchen trends is to use silicone, and recently nearly every kitchen product has been designed to make use of it's wonderful flexibility. In measuring cups it's normally been used to just flatten them for easy storage, but the Flipper Spoons & Cups are just that bit more clever. The Flippers have used careful design to actually make them more useful. Each of the silicone cups is suspended from a hard plastic ring, this allows them to turn inside out and instantly double their capacity! Instead of a handful of spoons and cups in your drawers, there are only three pieces in each Flipper Set. With wonderfully tactile finish the Flipper Spoons are so fun to use and keeps your counters less cluttered when baking and cooking. A great example of clever design with new materials, the Flipper Spoons and Cups are available from Lakeland.

I love rainbow sets of nesting bowls, they just seem to exude happy optimism, but I'll admit I often wonder how many of those bowls you'd actually use. As always Joseph Joseph have also noticed this, and created a clever Prep Set. The eight-piece set includes a large non-slip mixing bowl, a smaller mixing bowl with a pouring spout, a colander, sieve and a set of four measuring cups. Each brightly coloured piece features large convenient handles and nests within each other to neatly store out of the way. A great way to keep your kitchen organised, and a great gift for students or house warmings the Joseph Joseph Multi-Colour 8-Piece Bowl & Food Stacking Prep Set is £35.00 from Heals.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of electronic scales. I seem to have some weird effect on electronics, which causes them to act irrationally. Dan however is able to charm such technical devices, and at the same time finds my mechanical scales too imprecise. So we added the Salter Slim Electronic Scale to the wedding list. I'll admit the selection process for this item wasn't quite so complex. We chose the cheapest model as they all appeared to offer the same functions. The small platform design allows you to use a variety of bowls and containers upon the scale, while still tucking into a small corner of you kitchen. With easy to read 20mm high digits, the Slim Electronic Scale measures in both metric and imperial. With a capacity of 5kg/11lb, the Slim Scale measures in 1g or 0.1oz amounts. It also offers an aquatonic liquid measure function and an add and weigh function. Easy to clean and with a 15 year guarantee, the Salter Slim Electronic Scale should even survive my evil touch. Available from Amazon.co.uk, the Salter Slim Electronic Scale is just £14.08.

While apparently simple kitchen utensils, I love to see designers come up with clever measuring spoon and cups. The Tovolo Measuring Cup and Spoon Set combines both spoons and cups into a single elegant set. Each stainless steel utensil features a spherical cup, while the handle is formed by the bowl of long oval spoons. Perfect for display, the spoons rest in a black rubber trivet keeping them steady and easy to store. An interesting and clever design, the Tovolo set includes a ¼ cup with ¼ tsp handle, a 1/3 cup with ½ tsp handle, ½ cup with a 1 tsp handle and finally a 1 cup with 1 tbsp handle. Each cup is marked inside with graduated measurements. A great addition to the modern kitchen, the Tovolo Measuring Cup and Spoon Set is available for £18.95 from CooksParaphernalia.co.uk or $17.95 from Amazon.com
in the US.

Too often our tools feel just like that, practical things to do a job. Nigella Lawson’s measuring spoons show us even the practical things in life can still be beautiful. With shapes reminiscent of fine vintage silverware, the Living Kitchen measuring spoons are full of character. Each spoon features engraved text that accents the gently curving metal. My favourite is the smallest spoon, a pinch. Finally, I know how much that is! The set’s other spoons are quarter teaspoon, half teaspoon, teaspoon, dessert spoon (two teaspoons) and tablespoon. Designed by Sebastian Conran, the set is available in brushed or polished stainless steel and is dishwasher safe. The Living Kitchen measuring spoons are available in the UK for £20
or the US for $20

OK I’ll admit; I quite like volumetric measuring. It’s not great for everything, but at times it’s fantastic to just grab a cup and scoop your ingredients up rather than pull out the scales every time. Nigella Lawson’s measuring cups take the experience one step further with this fabulous retro inspired design. Each one sports a tiny curving handle, reminiscent of vintage tea sets. Granted they aren’t as compact as our trust metal cups, but they’ve such a rich persona and really bring back the kitchens of yore. They create a really interesting and homey feel when stacked and when hung individually on hooks they bring a fantastic decorative element to your kitchen. The handles are more decorative than functional, and they are perhaps not precise enough for the pedantic chef, but for those for whom cooking is an art and who love to dive in and get their hands dirty they are a joy. They also work well as prep bowls and small ramekins opening a range of creative uses. Perhaps not the most practical of item, Lawson’s measuring cups will enhance you cooking experience. They’re simply a pleasure to behold. Designed by Sebastian Conran for both liquid and dry measures, Living Kitchen measuring cups are available in a lightly textured pale blue, cream, white or black. They retail for £29.99
in the UK and $14.99
in the US.
