Despite being the longest and hottest summer we've seen in years, there have been very few barbeques. Everyone's been so busy, I think we may have to arrange one ourselves. I'm really tempted by the new and affordable Bodum Fyrkat Barbecue. A brightly coloured compact grill, the Fyrkat is perfect for cooking on the beach, patio or where ever you'd like to go. The tubular steel legs snake around the base of the enamel coated body, which is capped with a heat resistant silicone handle, protecting your fingers! Available in three fabulous colours, the Bodum Fyrkat is £34.99 from Lakeland.

I'm sure by now we've all seen the I'm Not a Paper Cup. It looks like those disposable take-away coffee cups, but is made from durable and reusable ceramic with a silicone lid. Kitchen Critic has never featured it because I was never convinced by its eco-credentials. Were you really going to take it into your local coffee shop for a refill? Were people going to start making their daily caffeine fix at home? It might be good for use in an office, but that was about it. However, I'm rather taken by the new version the Tea Lover's Eco Cup. Decorated with an eastern blossom design in the Victorian blue, it has a whisper of elegant china. Besides the original silicone lid, they've also added a band of silicone to protect your fingers, like those cardboard cup holders they have in Starbucks. A pretty way to enjoy your tea on the run, the Tea Lover's Eco Cup is £10.99 from IWOOT.

I love those graphic illustrations from the sixties; they have such character and charm. So I was immediately enamoured with this small plastic lunch box! Cheerfully proclaiming 'I Love London', there's an iconic red bus and several stylish figures stood at the bus stop all within a lacy boarder. I'd eat sandwiches everyday if I got to pack them in this trendy box. A generous 15cm by 13.5cm and an impressive 7cm deep, there's plenty of room for sandwiches, biscuits and other treats. Available online from Oliver Bonas, the affordable 'I Love London' Lunch Box is just £5.

If you are one of those lucky souls talented enough to create gorgeous cupcakes, you want people to enjoy you hard work. But after all that effort, you don't want to see them squished and smashed in a packed lunch or bag. These cute Individual Cupcake Caddies from Lakeland protect your creations when on the move. Held securely by raised fins in the base and an icing 'spear' in the lid, your iced artwork is nestled safely inside the plastic case. My only worry is that they are described as being suitable for cupcakes up to about 5cm, which I'd have called mini-cupcakes, but other than that reservation they look very useful. Available from Lakeland, a Set of Two Cupcake Caddies is £7.99.

If you love strong spicy flavours, you've probably experienced the painful misfortune of getting chilli in your eyes. Jim Hannon-Tan at Alessi has devised a simple solution in the Piccantino. The soft rubber body allows you to crush and crumble your chillies, releasing their fresh flavour, while protecting your fingers. If there's any chilli leftover, the polished steel cap will let you save it for later. Small enough to fit in your pocket, it's a perfect gift for connoisseurs who always want to top up their meals. The famous red chilli is a good luck charm in Naples, so hopefully the Alessi Piccantino is just a sign of good things to come. Available from Made In Design, the Alessi Piccantino Chilli Scruncher is £13.

We should appreciate this lovely sunny weather while we have the chance, and eating outdoors is an obvious choice. However that doesn't mean you have to haul huge baskets around, in India they use an interesting container of stacked bowls called a Tiffin Box. The word Tiffin simply means lunch or light meal, but the boxes offer an easy way to serve several different courses. The colourful boxes pictured are hand painted in Kashmir, and help support the local craftspeople. Each of the coloured layers is a different compartment, and the Tiffin box includes four metal plates. Use them for picnics, storing cakes and biscuits, or as pretty serving bowls, these Hand Painted Tiffin Boxes are £65 from Rose & Grey.

While we can appreciate the beauty of good quality food containers, our families may not agree. If you're tired of watching your best containers disappear into the office kitchen or lost on the playground, an EasyLunchbox may be the solution. Walking a line halfway between disposable containers and investment storage containers, the EasyLunchboxes are multi-use containers you can afford to lose. Designed by Kelly Lester, a busy American Mum, the EasyLunchboxes want to reduce waste, stress and help you pack a healthy lunch in minutes. Sent to us by Becky & Lolo we've taken time to really get to know the new kid on the Lunch Box scene. Designed for dry foods, the EasyLunchboxes don't offer an air-tight or leak-proof seal, but each container does have three different compartments. Great for Bento style lunches, there's no need to search for plastic bags or extra containers. One lunch = one container. The EasyLunchbox Kit includes four containers and an insulated bag (though a set of four boxes is also available independently if you'd rather use your own lunch bags). The Easy Lunch food container sits flat on the bottom of the insulated bag, leaving plenty of room for a drink, ice pack and a piece of fruit. With four containers included in every set, you don't need to wash the containers every night and you can prepare meals a fews days at a time. Made from high food grade polyprolylene plastic, the Easy Lunchboxes are free of PVC, BPA and phthalates and safe in the dishwasher, freezer and microwave! Now in the UK from Becky & Lolo, the Easy Lunchboxes save you time and stress on those busy mornings.

For centuries Terracotta has been used to keep water cool. As the water evaporates, it collects in the pores of the terracotta; naturally cooling the container. Designer Arian Brekveld has reclaimed this traditional material to create a modern Water Carafe. The rich terracotta is paired with a smooth grey silicone base for a contemporary minimalist style. An eco friendly way to keep water cool, there's no need for power cords or batteries. A great choice for alfresco dining, the Royal VKB Self Cooling Terracotta Water Carafe is £17.40 from Made in Design.

It doesn't always cost a fortune to get your hands on fashionable designer products. Jan Kaplicky was born in Prague in 1937 and when designing a new set of airline cutlery he was inspired by the legendary Czechoslovakian fighter planes. The Zlin Cutlery is named after these famous planes and features the sweeping smooth lines that remind you of those exciting blue skies. Unfortunately Kaplicky passed away last year, but in tribute Alessi have commissioned these poetic utensils. Made from an affordable thermoplastic resin, the set includes a fork, knife, spoon and teaspoon. Available in blue, yellow or green, the Zlin Cutlery sets are £7.95 from the Design Museum's Online Shop.

Because I have several intolerances, we need to take food wherever we go; but a packed lunch doesn't mean you need to eat sandwiches or leftovers all the time. Clever lunch boxes like Black + Blum's Box Appetit let you enjoy a delicious meal where ever you are. While made from plastic, the Box Appetit has a sophisticated style that would be appropriate on any dining table. Inside the container there is a triangular bowl which can be removed, allowing you to microwave either portion of your meal. So you can serve a fresh salad and a warm pasta dish in the same box. In the opposite corner there is also a small sauce pot perfect for salad dressing, ensuring your lettuce is always fresh and crunchy. The clear lid of the Box Appetit locks on to the bowl creating a water-tight seal, which is always important when you're on the run. The lid also holds the fork/knife and features a convenient dipping area if you fancy something like sushi. A sophisticated alternative to the packed lunch, the Black + Blum Box Appetit is £14.99 from Totally Funky. (There's also a matching Recipe book if you need inspiration!)

I'm quite happy to take re-useable bags with me to the grocery store; in fact I've acquired quite a collection of bags! The bit that's frustrating though is where to put these huge jute bags while I'm shopping, they often end up in the way or buried at the bottom of my cart, and apparently I'm not the only one with this problem. The new Footprint Bag Set, designed by two mums from Yorkshire, offers a small compact system that makes it painless to bring your own shopping bags. The specially designed case is small enough to fit in your glove box or handbag and hangs neatly from the supermarket trolley. Inside, the case holds four lightweight but strong bags, each in their own pocket. The set even includes a trolley 'pound' coin so you are always prepared. Practical and convenient, the Footprint Bag Set is £12.99 from Lakeland.

I've been meaning to buy a water bottle for a while now, but they are all so dull and badly designed that I've been procrastinating. However I'm quite enamoured with the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' water bottle I discovered yesterday. I'll admit the 'Keep Calm' poster is turning up on everything these days, turning it into more of a fad than a style icon, but for now I still like it on some applications. Now I've loved the Natural Slate Cheese Board since we covered it last Christmas, so finally to have one in my hands is a pleasure. Hand crafted with a slate knife, this creates a lovely scalloped edge around the board. The Scottish Slate has a wonderful rough texture that is finished in an acrylic resin which seals and hardens the surface. This shiny finish accents the delicious textures of your cheeses making them irresistible. The stone's natural properties help keep your cheese cool, while allowing their flavours to flourish. I especially love 'The Handpicked Collection's idea to use chalk to name each of the cheeses on offer. A fabulous serving board I can't wait to use, the Natural Slate Cheese Board is £14.50.

We also ordered one of the Kuhn Rikon coloured knives. These bright and cheerful knives use a revolutionary process to bond the colour to the metal blade without losing its edge. But my favourite feature is the handy plastic sheath. We often take food with us when we travel, and you can't always be sure you'll find a knife where you are going. This sturdy knife sheath means you can safely take a knife along with you. Great for picnics or just when you want a fruity snack on the run, these Coloured Knives let you safely prepare meals where ever you are. Available in Blue, Green, Red, Pink and Yellow the Coloured Knives are £5.95 from 'The Handpicked Collection'.

Easter has finally arrived, and for us that usually means a huge family dinner with all the family. With spring finally in the air and family around, it reminds me just how wonderful things are. I guess that explains my fondness for Emma Bridgewater's 'Truly Great' tea towel and tin tray. I've lived in a few countries, and I think the UK doesn't give itself nearly enough credit. I'm not trying to claim the UK is perfect (look at the cricket team for example), but there is nowhere I'd rather live. So celebrate what we have, with these bold and patriotic patterns. Available online from Emma Bridgewater, the handy tea towel and tray offer optimistism and hope in what looks like an uncertain summer.

I love the simplicity of this clever idea. While I'll admit it's not often an issue in England, nothing will set kids screaming faster than an insect in their drinks. When the excitement of summer holidays, family barbecues and picnics mean drinks get put down and forgotten, the bug screens ensure your drink is still safe when you finally find it. Made from a re-usable foam, the bug screens simply clip under the ring pull while letting you drink through the perforations. Available as a pack of twelve, six covers are designed to fit pop cans while the other six will fit beer cans. A clever idea for summer events, a pack of Bug Screens is just £1.99 from Lakeland.
