It’s easy to give a retro style to your kitchen with eye-catching appliances like these from Marks & Spencer. With a distinctive shape, these appliances offer important modern features in a nostalgic kitsch style. The chrome kettle and toaster recall the appliances you’d have found in your grandmother’s kitchen, with rolled metal edges and embossed decoration. The Classic Kettle features a hidden element and a 360° base that offers freedom to move around the kitchen and pour safely with either hand, while the Classic Toaster features a handy crumb tray, two sandwich cages and a retro roll-top dust cover. One of my biggest frustrations is trying to keeping all those kitchen gadget accessories organised and together. Beaters, blades and discs end up rattling around drawers or getting lost in the back of cabinets. The Kenwood offers a simple but effective solution with the kMix Hand Mixer. The sleek retro styled mixer stands in a simple plastic base with an integrated cord wrap and four columns to neatly hold each of the beaters. Besides the handy organisation, the kMix also features 400 watts of power, five speeds and a rubber handle for a firm, secure grip. A practical solution that keeps everything together while not taking up extra space, the kMix Hand Mixer is ready to use whenever you are. Power and function in a retro glamour form, the Kenwood HM792 kMix Hand Mixer is £39.95 from John Lewis.

Since we finally found a toaster we liked, we decided to go with the matching kettle. We opted for the plain black rather than steel finish, as many steel appliances show finger prints so clearly. The Krups FLF2 Kettle features a concealed element and offers a 1.6L capacity. The screw-on lids has a unique design that locks in place and covers the spout until you are ready to pour, thus preventing any painful accidents. Instead you simply squeeze the trigger on the handle to easily fill your cup. It boils rapidly, and offers the standard cordless design, limescale filter, auto shut-off and boil dry protection you'd expect. With water gauges on each side and an illuminating on button, the Krups kettle is what it should be. Simple and intuitive. Available from John Lewis, the Krupps Kettle FLF2 is £39.95.

When it comes to choosing a toaster, there are an awful lot to choose from, but I was frequently disappointed by the customer reviews I found on line. No matter what the price range, it seemed impossible to find a toaster people were really happy with. Luckily the Krups Expert 2-Slice Toaster was released a few months ago. I'm not usually a fan of stainless steel appliances, but in this case I was willing to forgive it due to it's thorough design. With a relatively compact design, the Krups expert doesn't aim to take over your countertop. It features wide slots perfect for bagels and a unique carriage control which should end the need for toast tongs. It delivers even small crumpets or buns right to the top where it's easy to grab them. It is super quick, and offers eight levels of browning control to ensure your toast comes out just how you like it. With additional features like the Re-heat and Frozen settings, a mid-cycle cancel button, a removable bun warmer and easy to access crumb tray it's no surprise that both Which? And Consumer Reports are reported to have rated it highly. We've not had it long, but so far we've been thrilled with the Krups Expert Toaster FEM231 which we purchased from John Lewis for £39.95.

Granted I may still be a little heady after the madness of the last few weeks, but there is something thrilling and exciting about the Giles & Posner Hot Dog Rotisserie. Bringing back childhood memories of watching the slow turning machine at the local cinema, the Giles & Posner Hot Dog Rotisserie finally lets you take control. Featuring five non-stick rollers, the Hot Dog Rotisserie can evenly cook four sausages in minutes, while two bread heaters ensure warm toasty goodness. There is even a removable drip tray, which means your hot dogs while succulent are never greasy. A brilliant gift for hot dog fanatics, the Giles & Posner Hot Dog Rotisserie brings that flavour and taste of special events home. Certainly a gift for that person who has everything, the Joseph Joseph 'Chop and Rinse' is £14.95 from PrezzyBox

Granted this isn't a new product, but as I don't often wander through the infant section I'd missed this fabulous gadget. Perfect for making fresh food daily, the Babycook is simple to use and easy to clean. When finished you lift out the steaming basket and add the vegetables to the reserved cooking water and blend into a lovely smooth purée. Designed to also reheat pre-made made meals, the Babycook is the only appliance you'll need. A great way to make home-made meals that preserve vitamins and can be organic, the Beaba Babycook and Blender even saves on the washing up. When looking at kettles these days you seem to have two choices, ugly plastic or bright and brash steel. While there are a few nice looking kettles many seem to have cheap plastic parts and bad reputations. It may be a bit early to see how well they last, but the 'All New Kettle' from Magimix might be worth the risk. With a tall cylindrical form, the electric kettle has a practical understated style. Kettles may appear to be a basic appliance, but Magimix has taken the time to design some wonderful details into their new kettle. You probably expect the concealed element for easy cleaning, a fast boil and removable filter, but the Magimix kettle also features an insulated double wall body and a magical pop open lid. Using the popular 360° cordless base design, in the Magimix kettle the cord winds neatly inside when not needed. Hopefully a bright new star in the tea kettle market, the Magimix All New Kettle is available in charcoal
, red
, cream
and brushed steel

A must have for gadget and pizza lovers, The Pizza Maker creates delicious home-made meals in minutes. Featuring two heating elements, The Pizza Maker bakes a crispy base while perfectly grilling toppings and cheese. The secret of the crispy pizza bases is in the traditional stone base, which evenly transfers heat from centre to edge. This creates an intense heat that absorbs excess moisture. Each pizza cooks in just 5 minutes, making it a great activity for family dinners. The stone base can also be interchanged with a Deep Dish Pan for making an array of meals like omelettes, pancakes, frittatas and even bacon and eggs. The problem with so many cooking gadgets is you never have enough room for them all. You end up trying to balance how much you'll use the product versus how big it is. The Holiday from Palson realises this and combines two cooking products into one. Offering both deep frying convenience and a trendy fondue pot, you'll get twice as much use out of the Holiday. Now I'll admit I'm normally wary of any two-in-one product, as generally they do both jobs badly, but the Holiday does seem to be based around a simple mechanism. Both deep frying and fondues require heated bowls, it's only the temperature which is different. I suspect that it may also be handy for heated dips at parties. With a half litre capacity, this little gadget offers extra freedom and creativity for £26.99 from ElectricShopping.com.

The centre of every British home is its electric kettle. In our house we don’t even drink tea, but there it still stands a symbol of the British institution. I’ve always been mystified by its lack of status in the American home. Generally quicker than a stove top pan, the kettle is perfect for hot water on demand. We use ours for topping up pans that are in danger of boiling dry, mixing up stock cubes, even topping up the bath when the hot water has run out, as well as the ever popular tea our guests crave. Prestige have recently released a new electric kettle that brings a wonderful retro style to Britain’s favourite appliance. A simple domed form sings out with fabulous colour. The handle is a wonderful flattened tube that is easy to grip and hold. Bringing the vintage style into the modern age, Prestige have incorporated a subtle base which uses the modern central docking pin design. Amazingly simple, the pin design allows the kettle to be easy replaced from any angle, removing the old hassle of aligning the kettle on its base exactly. Prestige have also added a subtle water level indicator, which is extremely useful but doesn’t intrude on the sleek vintage style. Available in black, silver, almond, red, and the trendy duck egg blue, there is a colour for every kitchen. Perfect for bringing a sense of familiarity and friendly warmth to your kitchen the Prestige Deco kettle is just £52
July 2008 EDIT: A bit hard to find now, you can still get the Almond Prestige Deco Kettle for £45 from Heal's.
